They tried to put it off altogether with some polite Republican idea of
a "trigger" period, an interval during which govt. agrees to do nothing
at all, while in exchange the insurance co.s dial back their greed
temporarily. The net "benefit" to the American people of the trigger
idea is to dissipate legislative will to reform the system, wait out the
anger of the public, and cause the people to give up hope. And after the
trigger period expires, the insurance corporations and their political
monkeys go back to the business of juicing Americans as usual. But that
is too brazen.

So now they're figuring out ways how to enact "reform" while making sure
the reforms cannot work and bring discredit to the idea that these
crushing problems have a political solution.

Mind you, these are the Democrats that are knifing healthcare reform in
the crib. They may blame it on Republicans but the fact is that the
Democrats could pass whatever plan they wanted to. It seems though that
they only want to pass a plan that the Republicans will agree to, but
Republicans are obdurate and cohesive. (They actually act like a party
sometimes) Consequently the Democrats are limiting themselves to voting
for a Republican plan, not a Democratic plan. You have to wonder why we
vote for them.

Do not be deceived: there is no room to make a compromise here. Any
successful national healthcare plan would negate and invalidate forever
everything the Republican party believes in and everything it has
promoted for one hundred years. National healthcare is the death of the
Republican philosophy. They are facing extinction. Therefore they will
never agree to any compromise that would have a snowball's chance to
succeed in practice. However, you MUST pass a viable plan or the
disasters it causes will spell the end of the Democratic Party; and no
viable plan will pass except over the GOP's dead body.

Washington appears poised to rescue the banking system with a $700
billion bailout, but are banks ready to help themselves?

Judging from activity (or, rather, non-activity) in the credit markets
Thursday, the answer is not quite yet.

The difference between rates in the overnight lending markets and
rates in the longer-term markets, a gap that is widening, suggests
banks aren't willing to lend much to each other. That is the type of
activity needed to break the logjam in the credit markets.

The Federal Reserve has been flooding the banking system with cash, so
much so in the last week that it has pushed the effective overnight
interest rate below the central bank's target 2%. On Thursday it
announced a $20 billion reverse repurchase program with banks to try
to narrow that gap.

Meanwhile, the London interbank offered rate, which is the rate at
which banks lend to each other, continues to rise. The three-month
Libor is at 3.77%, according to UBS, and the difference between that
and the overnight rate suggests "interbank lending is broken," said
William O'Donnell, the head of U.S. interest rate strategy at UBS.
Rather than extend credit for longer than overnight, banks appear to
be hoarding cash.

"I hope the Fed has a lot of thumbs, because there is water breaking
through the dikes everywhere," O'Donnell said.

Expectations rose Thursday that the Fed could jump in with a rate cut,
either on or before its next scheduled meeting in late October.
According to the futures market, the expectation of a cut jumped to an
85% chance, from a 30% chance just last week.

The tumultuous events in the credit markets last week and this week
"give the Fed cover to go ahead and cut rates," says Aaron Smith, a
senior economist at Moody's Investors Service's Economy.com.

The grim news in the credit markets has been overshadowed by euphoria
in the stock markets, which rallied Thursday on news that Congress was
near agreement to approve Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's $700
billion bank rescue plan, with revisions.

How else to explain a 300-point rally on a day when new-home sales in
August showed an 11.5% decline, a 17-year low, and General Electric
(nyse: GE - news - people ), a market bellwether, cut its forecast and
suspended stock buybacks because of a bleaker outlook for its
financial services business?

Signs of stress abound. According to data released by the Federal
Reserve Wednesday, short-term debt known as commercial paper
contracted by $61 billion over the last week and $113 billion over the
last two weeks, a period marked by the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers
(nyse: LEH - news - people ) and the government rescue of American
International Group (nyse: AIG - news - people ).

Companies sell commercial paper, which is essentially a short-term
IOU, to fund daily cash flow activities, like payroll. Financial
companies use it to fund pools of car loans, student loans and the
like. A contraction in the commercial paper market suggests either a
lack of buyers or a lack of lending, or both.

Standard & Poor's said in a worst-case scenario, defaults on junk
bonds of non-financial companies could rise to 23% between now and
2010, which would make the next three years the worst period since
1981. Consumer-sensitive sectors--such as consumer products, media and
entertainment, and retail and restaurants--will be among the worst
hit, S&P says, in line with what happened in 1990-91.

The Fed and the Bush administration have been scrambling to shore up
the banking system or, at the very least, put a floor under the
housing market, which the banks' fate hangs on.

In July Congress passed sweeping plan to boost the housing markets, or
at the very least stop the bleeding. Just a couple of weeks after
that, however, the government had to rescue mortgage finance titans
Fannie Mae (nyse: FNM - news - people ) and Freddie Mac (nyse: FRE -
news - people ) with a $200 billion bailout. Then, in a three-day
span, Lehman failed; Merrill Lynch (nyse: MER - news - people ),
fearing a funding crunch, sold itself to Bank of America (nyse: BAC -
news - people ); and AIG had to be taken over.

In testimony to the Joint Economic Committee Wednesday, Fed Chairman
Ben Bernanke cast a grim assessment of the near-term economy. "Ongoing
developments in financial markets are directly affecting the broader
economy through several channels, most notably by restricting the
availability of credit," he said.

The $700 billion bank rescue effort, in which the Treasury will buy up
toxic assets from banks in the hopes of kick-starting the credit
markets, will help bank balance sheets, but that doesn't mean banks
will play along.

Banks lend when they feel confident, and when they are making the
profits that allow them to expand their business. The industry is in
contraction mode at the moment. "Once spurned, twice shy," UBS's
O'Donnell said Thursday. The Treasury's lending program and other
attempts to jump-start the economy "are the first bricks laid in what
is likely a very long path for banks and the economy," he added.

Members of Congress have as much as $196 million collectively invested in companies doing business with the Defense Department, earning millions since the onset of the Iraq war, according to a study by a nonpartisan research group.

Not all the companies in which lawmakers invested are typical defense contractors. Corporations such as PepsiCo, IBM, Microsoft and Johnson & Johnson have at one point received defense-related contracts, notes the report by the Washington-based Center for Responsive Politics.

The center's review of lawmakers' 2006 financial disclosure statements suggests that members' holdings could pose a conflict of interest as they decide the fate of Iraq war spending. Several members earning money from these contractors have plum committee or leadership assignments, including Democratic Sen. John Kerry, independent Sen. Joseph Lieberman and House Republican Whip Roy Blunt.

The study found that more Republicans than Democrats hold stock in defense companies, but that the Democrats who are invested had significantly more money at stake. In 2006, for example, Democrats held at least $3.7 million in military-related investments, compared to Republican investments of $577,500.

Overall, 151 members hold investments worth $78.7 million to $195.5 million in companies that receive defense contracts that are worth at least $5 million. These investments earned them anywhere between $15.8 million and $62 million between 2004 and 2006, the center concludes.

It is unclear how many members still hold these investments and exactly how much money has been made. Disclosure reports for 2007 aren't due until this May. Also, members are required to report only a general range of their holdings.

Taiwan announces stock market stimulus package

TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan's cabinet will take steps to prop up the ailing stock market, including encouraging insurance companies to invest more of their T$8 trillion ($263 billion) in assets in the market, local media reported on Sunday.

Newspapers detailed the steps in their Sunday editions following a late Saturday meeting where the cabinet discussed ways to shore up the market , which tumbled 3.4 percent on Friday to a five-month closing low.

Other steps the cabinet will take include encouraging major government funds to invest more in the market.

The drop in Taiwan's stock market has been part of a broad global selloff, but it has been particularly acute amid a flight of foreign money.

WASHINGTON: In June, short of people to process cases of incompetence and fraud by federal contractors, officials at the General Services Administration responded with what has become the government's reflexive answer to almost every problem.

They hired another contractor.

It did not matter that the company they chose, CACI International, had itself recently avoided a suspension from federal contracting; or that the work, delving into investigative files on other contractors, appeared to pose a conflict of interest; or that each person supplied by the company would cost taxpayers $104 an hour. Six CACI workers soon joined hundreds of other private-sector workers at the G.S.A., the government's management agency.

Without a public debate or formal policy decision, contractors have become a virtual fourth branch of government. On the rise for decades, spending on federal contracts has soared during the Bush administration, to about $400 billion last year from $207 billion in 2000, fueled by the war in Iraq, domestic security and Hurricane Katrina, but also by a philosophy that encourages outsourcing almost everything government does.

Contractors still build ships and satellites, but they also collect income taxes and work up agency budgets, fly pilotless spy aircraft and take the minutes at policy meetings on the war. They sit next to federal employees at nearly every agency; far more people work under contracts than are directly employed by the government. Even the government's online database for tracking contracts, the Federal Procurement Data System, has been outsourced (and is famously difficult to use).

Reporters without Borders has rerleased it's Press Freedom Index for 2005 , and America is slipping down toward the bottom with all those other Dictatorial regimes, many of whom it now claims as pals ( Pakistan, Suadi Arabia, Vietnam, China,Libya..etc).

The report ranked the United States in 44th place, an atomic drop from a favorable position of 22nd held last year, and from a handsome 17th place in 2002.

Shit...it shows El Salvador and Bosnia as ranking higher in press freedom than the US !
The "Dane" countries still come in on top for their unbounded freedom of press ( Denmark, Finland,Iceland,Netherlands, Ireland, Norway, etc).

HOUSTON -- Thousands of refugees of Hurricane Katrina were transported to the Astrodome in Houston this week. In an extreme act of looting, one group actually stole a bus to escape ravaged areas in Louisiana.

About 100 people packed into the stolen bus. They were the first to enter the Houston Astrodome, but they weren't exactly welcomed.

The big yellow school bus wasn't expected or approved to pass through the stadium's gates. Randy Nathan, who was on the bus, said they were desperate to get out of town.

"If it werent for him right there," he said, "we'd still be in New Orleans underwater. He got the bus for us."

Eighteen-year-old Jabbor Gibson jumped aboard the bus as it sat abandoned on a street in New Orleans and took control.

"I just took the bus and drove all the way here...seven hours straight,' Gibson admitted. "I hadn't ever drove a bus."

We extend our condolences to the families and loved ones of those who have lost their lives today and our heartfelt sympathy to all those who have been injured by the bombs in London.

No one can condone acts of violence aimed at working people going about their daily lives. They have not been a party to, nor are they responsible for, the decisions of their government. They are entirely innocent and we condemn those who have killed or injured them.

The loss of innocent lives, whether in this country or Iraq, is precisely the result of a world that has become a less safe and peaceful place in recent years.

We have worked without rest to remove the causes of such violence from our world. We argued, as did the security services in this country, that the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq would increase the threat of terrorist attack in Britain. Tragically Londoners have now paid the price of the government ignoring such warnings.

We urge the government to remove people in this country from harms way, as the Spanish government acted to remove its people from harm, by ending the occupation of Iraq and by turning its full attention to the development of a real solution to the wider conflicts in the Middle East.

Getting people to pray apparently takes a lot of money

The Presidential Prayer Team began with a simple idea: Encourage people to pray for the president daily. In the aftermath of the terrorist attacks of 2001, it was an appealing plea. No politics, no agenda, no dogma. Just pray for the country's leaders.

The idea caught on. The Scottsdale-based charity became one of the most successful and fastest-growing non-profits in the country. Nearly 3 million people have signed up at the organization's Web site, and donations have topped $6 million.

But operating the charity has not been so easy. John Lind, its president, said the challenge is to keep people motivated to pray daily. And sustaining that energy costs money. Lots of it.

Financial records show the Presidential Prayer Team has been deeply in debt since its inception. Currently, it's in the hole by $531,891.

The red ink seems surprising considering the wild success the charity has enjoyed and the simplicity of its mission. It doesn't seem like it would take millions of dollars to get people to pray, after all.

"If we're going to ask them and encourage them to pray daily, we need to provide resources to help them do that," Lind said.

Some might find that encouragement by buying a Presidential Prayer Team souvenir to serve as a daily reminder. A gold logo coin in a display case goes for a suggested donation of $30. The coffee mug with a gold seal is $20. A wristband is $10.

"We just look at it as part of our mission of encouraging them to pray. Part of, I think, that encouragement is educating them on the issues.

To get selected, members must sign a statement that says the Bible is inerrant and that non-believers will suffer the "resurrection of damnation." They also must agree to donate at least $180 a year.

Lind said the group started with an interest-free loan of $250,000 from a person who wishes to stay anonymous.

But the debt continued to balloon each year. Even as 2002 brought more than $2.2 million in donations, the group's records show it spent more than $2.5 million. The next year, the group raked in $2.5 million but again overspent. Its debt at the end of 2003 was $845,769.

The financial records show some spectacular figures. Management and consulting fees cost $770,000 over the past few years. Legal fees cost $600,000. Postage has cost $1 million. Last year, the group spent $500,000 on a direct-mail appeal, Lind said.

The records also show that, in 2002, the Presidential Prayer Team gave away more than $1.1 million in grants to other unspecified groups. Lind said that was a paperwork error and that no money has left the Prayer Team.

Lind, who was hired in late 2002 with a salary of $108,000, said the group has cut back on costs, partly by having him run the charity instead of hiring outsiders.

Power will crush out anything in it's path in an ever floundering attempt to SECURE it's Power, to feel SAFE ( at last), and yet that feeling is never achieved.

I was posting them here mainly for myself , and because nobody except a couple pals came to this blog, and i saw it as a semi-private place for me to list the links i wanted to check again later. Well i soon found out that when one post Mp3 links on the web there is no such thing as remaining 'semi-private'--haha-- you will be found out quickly by the seekers. I've since found another method to log my targets.
On top of that i do respect the folks who work hard uploading their works and certainly didn't want to ruffle their feathers...long may they thrive! And there are many many other and better known blogs that already do a fine job of posting the daily 'harvest'. ( and you all know who they are anyway..ha).

Just at the time that Bushy has been on the road trying to convince the working and middle class to 'forgive' the gov of the SS shortfall/debt it will owe in some 40 years, a shortfall said to be about 3.4 trillion$. If Bush can get his way he will getting the middle classes to pay for about 2 decades of Free cash pushed right into the hands of the top 1% of this country's wealthiest.

the (ys) ones are " yousendit" links and may be troublesome to grab, but i hear they hold a file for up to 7 days, so if you see a link you realllly like you may wanna hold it for 7 days and try each day for the grab.

And where nobody laughs and everybody lies and the days drag by like dead animals and the nights are full of whores and junkies clawing at your windows and tax men jamming writs under your door and the screams of the doomed coming up through the air shaft along with white cockroaches and red stringworms full of AIDS and burst of foul gas with no sunrise and the morning streets full of preachers begging for money and fondling themselves with gangs of fat young boys trailing after them ...

Ah ... but we were talking about Heaven... or trying to...but somehow we got back into Hell.

Maybe there is no Heaven. Brad DeLong has a nice roundup in this post with the links to a series of insicisve articles in the LA Times dealing with the enormous transference of Income Volatility that has slowly been pushed downward on families and workers in recent years. I'd urge all to read them as this is an important and often overlooked aspect of any ' growth or returns' picture. Maybe we need to develop a Sharpe Ratio indicator for the average income -worker to help make sure one is getting a viable additional return for the extra risk being shoved onto them.

This is also what the whole SS Privitazation is really about too... laying off risk and volatility from the Gov to the common man, piling on more of the stuff all the time. Some people may forget that one of the resons we form governments to begin is to allay some such ' big problems' off onto a mass structure that may be the only way to handle them..... sort a caualty insurance for a society. republicans are all about removing this Insurance from the masses.

The Times has tried to gauge the effect of this risk shift over the last 25 years by tracing the rising volatility of family income.

During the early '70s, the inflation-adjusted income of most of those in the middle of the economic spectrum — making about $50,000 a year in today's terms — bounced up and down by no more than $6,500 annually. By the beginning of this decade, those fluctuations had climbed to as much as $13,500, the newspaper's figures show. At the same time, the increase in volatility has been far greater for the working poor, while even top earners haven't been immune from ever-larger income swings.

To supplement these findings on income volatility, the paper looked at specific income-rattling experiences. In conjunction with Page and Stevens at UC Davis, it explored how frequently a representative sample of families was hit by any of seven common but potentially destabilizing events. The Times then assessed what fraction of the families touched by any of these episodes suffered a 50% or greater decline in their annual income. With the extremely sad total of 1,000 deaths in Iraq just being surpassed, keep
in mind these facts.

- 890 deaths happened after President Bush's May 1, 2003 "Mission Accomplished"
speech.

- 801 deaths happened after Bush's July 2, 2003 speech where he taunted the
insurgents with the phrase "bring 'em on."

- 595 deaths happened after the Dec. 13, 2003 capture of Saddam Hussein.

After all these deaths, are we supposed to believe things are getting better in
Iraq?

Newsday has a story out that now has US (non)Intelligence rumbling about their next faked attack. Scheduled for Sep 2 ?...well geee isn't that the exact date that El Chimpster is suppose to be sieg hieling his commrades at the RNC Convention !? The timing astounds...yet of course it MUST just all be coincidence.

Maybe Ed Gillespie will just turn a 'mad-bomber-arab' loose in the convention hall and have him charge the podium, therewith have the Chimpster personally subdue and humliate the evil-monster, Live on TV, for all the nation to see, and hence have the Monkey Pres plant his foot on the offender's chest and a an american flag and pole in his mouth . ;-)

The GOP is "Wagging the Dog" so bad on this one that the pooch's eyes are crossed. We just saw the unfolding of a huge STAGED event-- the July Surprise -- where chimpy called up and placed an order for one terrorist by a certain date--just as one might order a cheeseburger. And lo and behold it was delivered just in time.

One might have to wonder....if the Pres can catch such villians just by ASKING pakistan for them--then WHY are we spending sooo much money and lost lives on farflung Wars ? And why not ask for ALL OF THEM , Mr Bush , instead of just a measly One for your stage prop ?

The answer is pretty evident--- the More this Terrorism can be dragged out, the better it is for BushCo--- the more the assinine spending and debts can be dragged out, the better it is for BushCo---- the more the american people can be scared and made to suffer, the better it is for BushCo.
